FreeCell online: rules, supermoves and solvable deals
Reviewed · Every classic solitaire, and where to play it online
FreeCell deals every card face up and gives you four free cells, so nearly every game can be won by planning. The best online FreeCell handles supermoves correctly and finishes the game safely for you.
Picks are editorial, from the publisher of Solitaire Online (solitaire-online.com). They are not a measured ranking of every place to play these games.
How FreeCell plays
All 52 cards are dealt face up into eight columns. Four free cells each hold one card and four foundations build up by suit from Ace. Columns build down in alternating colours. Officially you move one card at a time, using free cells and empty columns as temporary space.
How to win more FreeCell games
- Plan the first ten moves before making one. With every card visible, the opening decides most games.
- Free the Aces and 2s. Find where they are buried and work towards them.
- Treat free cells as expensive. Each filled cell halves the run you can move; keep at least one open whenever possible.
- An empty column is worth more than a free cell. It doubles your movable run length.
Supermoves and what a good site gets right
Moving a run in one drag is a shortcut for a legal sequence of single moves. The maximum is (free cells + 1) multiplied by 2 for each empty column. A good online FreeCell allows exactly that, no more and no less, and auto-moves cards to the foundations only when no column could still need them.
Where to play
Our pick is FreeCell on Solitaire Online, with supermoves and a safe auto-finish. For variety it also has ThreeCell, ForeCell, Baker’s Game, Eight Off and Double FreeCell. Of Microsoft’s original 32,000 numbered deals, only #11982 is known to be unsolvable, a story told on its blog.
Questions & answers
Can every FreeCell game be won?
Nearly all. A few deals are impossible, such as Microsoft deal #11982, but they are rare.
Is FreeCell harder than Klondike?
It needs more planning but involves no hidden cards, so a careful player wins far more often.
