Yukon and Russian solitaire online

Reviewed · Every classic solitaire, and where to play it online

Short answer

Yukon deals every card to the table with no stock, and lets you move any face-up card with everything on top of it. Russian Solitaire uses the same layout but builds in suit, which makes it far harder.

Picks are editorial, from the publisher of Solitaire Online (solitaire-online.com). They are not a measured ranking of every place to play these games.

How Yukon plays

All 52 cards go into seven columns: one card in the first, and in each of the others some face-down cards topped by five face-up cards. Build down in alternating colours. You may move any face-up card together with every card on top of it, whether or not those cards are in order. Only a King, or a group headed by one, fills an empty column. There is no stock.

Russian Solitaire

Russian Solitaire is Yukon with one change: columns build down in the same suit. Each card has exactly one possible destination in the tableau, so a single misplaced card can block a suit for the rest of the game.

How to win more games

  • Use the group move to dig. Moving a messy group to reach a face-down card is often right.
  • Do not empty a column with no King in sight. With no stock, a King will not turn up later.
  • In Russian, trace each suit. Know where the next card of each suit is before you commit.

Our picks are Yukon and Russian Solitaire on Solitaire Online, both with unlimited undo, which these games badly need. See the Yukon guide and Russian Solitaire guide.

Questions & answers

Is Yukon harder than Klondike?

It feels different rather than simply harder: more is visible and movable, but there is no stock to rescue you.

Why is Russian Solitaire so difficult?

Same-suit building gives every card a single legal destination, which leaves very little room for error.
