Spider solitaire online: one, two and four suits

Reviewed · Every classic solitaire, and where to play it online

Short answer

Spider uses two decks and ten columns, and its difficulty depends on the suit count: one suit is relaxing, four suits is one of the hardest common solitaires. Pick a site that lets you choose and says which you are playing.

Picks are editorial, from the publisher of Solitaire Online (solitaire-online.com). They are not a measured ranking of every place to play these games.

How Spider plays

Fifty-four of the 104 cards go into ten columns, six deep in the first four and five in the rest, with the top cards face up. The remaining 50 are dealt ten at a time, one onto every column, whenever you choose, as long as no column is empty. Any card can go on one rank higher, but only same-suit runs move together. A complete King-to-Ace run of one suit leaves the table; clear all eight to win.

How to win more Spider games

  • Build in suit whenever you have the choice. Mixed runs cannot move as a unit and become dead weight.
  • Empty a column early and guard it. An empty column is the only way to untangle mixed runs; do not fill it with a single card you could have placed elsewhere.
  • Deal from the stock only when you have done everything useful. Each deal buries ten cards.
  • Before dealing, arrange columns so the incoming card is least harmful, for example with high cards on top where a random card is likely to fit.

What the best online Spider needs

Separate one-, two- and four-suit modes, labelled. Ten columns that stay readable on a phone, which means tightening overlap rather than shrinking card faces. Unlimited undo, because four-suit Spider is a game of trying lines and backing out. Clear feedback when a run is not movable because it mixes suits.

Where to play

Our pick is Solitaire Online, which gives each suit count its own page: one suit, two suits and four suits. It also has Spider relatives such as Spiderette, Will o’ the Wisp, Black Widow and Beetle, and a blog piece arguing that four-suit Spider is winnable more often than it feels.

Questions & answers

Which Spider is easiest?

One suit. Every descending run can move together, so the game is about ordering rather than untangling.

Why can't I deal the next row?

Standard Spider rules require every column to hold at least one card before you deal from the stock.
